When Pope Leo XIV was elected following the papal conclave back in early May, it wasn’t just a surprise for residents of the United States. Not only was he from Chicago, but he was also a noted fan of the hometown White Sox, and he has proved his fandom over the past week while engaging in activities at the Vatican City. Pope Leo Shows White Sox Fandom By Joining Fan’s Chants Last Wednesday, Pope Leo made headlines with his attire. During an appearance in which he met with newlywed couples, the 69-year-old broke papal attire code, and was photographed wearing a White Sox hat to go along with the usual white cassocks that are typical for a man in his position. While riding in the Popemobile and passing by a crowd gathered at The Vatican, Pope Leo encountered a group of people that were apparently from his hometown. As he passed, the group started a “WHITE SOX!” chant. Leo at first met them with a wave and a smile, but eventually joined in, doing some chanting himself, which is clearly seen on an amateur video of the event. Leo Appears To Be A True Die-Hard Sox Fan When he was elected, residents of Chicago and sports fans in general had a go at dissecting his life as a baseball fan. There were rumors that he was a fan of the team from the South Side of Chicago, which was confirmed when internet sleuths found footage of him attending Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. There has been a mural constructed at Guaranteed Rate Field, which features Pope Leo’s likeness both in his papal outfit as well as a depiction of his attendance for that World Series game. The White Sox could use some of his holy energy in order to turn things around with their franchise. After finishing with one of the worst records in MLB history last season, Chicago has won just 23 of their first 73 games in 2025, and are already 23.5 games back in the AL Central. They are the second team this season to reach 50 losses, behind only the lowly Colorado Rockies. Written by Sports EditorAnthony Cardenas All posts by Anthony Cardenas
