The Predator franchise returns to theaters with its ninth installment, Predator: Badlands. View the box office odds for the opening weekend of Predator: Badlands.

What is Predator: Badlands about?

Get ready for a different take on the Predator franchise. In previous outings, the predators are the antagonists who hunt the humans. In Predator: Badlands, the Predator is now the protagonist.

Set in the future on a remote planet, Dex (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a young Predator, is an outcast in his clan. To prove his worth, Dex must embark on a dangerous journey that ends with a battle against the ultimate adversary.

Along the way, Dex finds an ally in Thia (Elle Fanning), a damaged Weyland-Yutani synthetic who helps the Predator on his journey.

Dan Trachtenberg directed Predator: Badlands from a screenplay by Patrick Aison and Brian Duffield, based on a story by Trachtenberg and Aison.

Producers include Trachtenberg, John Davis, Brent O’Connor, Marc Toberoff, and Ben Rosenblatt.

Trachtenberg has now become the de facto architect of the Predator franchise. In 2022, Trachtenberg helmed Prey, a Predator prequel that follows a young Comanche woman who must protect her tribe against a Predator.

Released on Hulu, Prey garnered critical acclaim, with many hailing the movie as the best Predator entry since the original.

Earlier this year, Trachtenberg directed Predator: Killer of Killers, an animated anthology film on Hulu and Disney+. Like Prey, Killer of Killers was praised by critics and fans who loved the intriguing premise and gory violence.

Predator: Badlands will release in theaters on November 7, 2025.

Do audiences want to see the Predator franchise on the big screen?

That is the big question heading into this weekend. Badlands is the first Predator movie to receive a theatrical release since The Predator.

Released in September 2018, The Predator opened to $24 million at the domestic box office.

Conservative estimates have Predator: Badlands opening to $25 million. However, the sci-fi action film could reach $30 million.

What’s working in Badlands’ favor is the critical acclaim. Currently, Predator: Badlands has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If Predator: Badlands is just as good as Prey, then fans are in for a treat.

Update: Predator: Badlands opened to a franchise record of $40 million.
