New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan.

The New York Jets coaching search will include a familiar face, Rex Ryan. The former NFL coach will interview for the Jets’ head coaching position, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Rex Ryan To Interview With Jets

Ryan appeared on ESPN Radio with Jake Asman on Monday. When asked if he expects an interview for the Jets’ head coaching position, Ryan said, “I believe I will.”

Ryan currently works for ESPN as an NFL analyst.

Ryan served as the head coach of the Jets for six seasons from 2009-2014. Under Ryan, the Jets reached consecutive AFC Championship games in his first two seasons.

After the AFC Championship game appearances, the Jets never made the playoffs again under Ryan, a drought that still lasts today.

Ryan was dismissed by the organization after a 4-12 season in 2014. Ryan went 46-50 in the regular season with a 4-2 playoff record.

Ryan was hired by the Bills in 2015, going 15-16 in two seasons.

While working at ESPN, Ryan has been openly campaigning to be interviewed for the job. Ryan has mentioned how the team would play harder if he’s hired as head coach.

Ryan has interviewed for several defensive coordinating positions in the past few seasons. In 2023, Ryan interviewed to the defensive coordinator under Sean Payton. Ryan also interviewed with the Cowboys last offseason to be their defensive coordinator after Dan Quinn left to become the Washington Commanders head coach.

Jets Coaching Search Begins

Ever since the Jets fired Robert Saleh in October, the Jets have been looking for a new head coach.

Jeff Ulbrich was named the interim head coach. With the team at 4-12, it’s safe to assume Ulbrich will not be the head coach in 2025.

The Jets cannot interview any current NFL assistants until the end of the regular season. The Jets are expected to interview Ryan and Ron Rivera for their head coaching vacancy for now.

The Jets finish the regular season at home against the Miami Dolphins (8-8) on Sunday, Jan. 5.
