Rough Night At BNP Paribas Open, Nick Kyrgios Retires And Paula Badosa Withdraws

It was a rough night at the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells, as Nick Kyrgios and Paula Badosa had to curtail their plans because of chronic injury issues.
Nick Kyrgios Tried To Play With An Ailing Wrist
Kyrgios was making his return to Indian Wells for the first time since 2022. A wrist injury sidelined him from the game for two years. There were concerns about his wrist when he halted a practice session after experiencing wrist pain.

He was down 6-7 and 0-3 to Botic van de Zandschulp when he took a medical timeout. As the physio was working on his wrist, Nick Kyrgios became emotional. It has been a long journey back to competitive tennis for it to be cut short so soon.
Paula Badosa Is Experiencing Back Issues Again
In other unfortunate injury news, Paula Badosa withdrew from the tournament the night before her opening round match. There were fears this could happen when she withdrew from the Eisenhower Cup mixed doubles exhibition with partner and boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas. Fans hoped the extra few days would be enough to make the back issue Paula Badosa has dealt with for years bearable for the 2021 Indian Wells champion to take the court for her first round match.
Good News Updates: Belinda Bencic And McCartney Kessler Enjoy Big Wins
On the other side of the spectrum, new mom Belinda Bencic dominated in her opening round match as did Austin Open finalist McCartney Kessler. Bencic’s game has been phenomenal since her return, and it was fitting that she had a big win on the same day that the WTA announced a groundbreaking maternity leave initiative providing compensation for eligible players who need time away to start families or undergo fertility treatments to one day start their families.
