Fans of the New York Giants have already grown frustrated with the Russell Wilson experiment. Boos rained down on the team during Sunday night’s loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, mostly directed at the putrid offensive performance and poor quarterback play. But the fans will be getting what they asked for in Week 4, as it has been announced that rookie Jaxson Dart has been named the new starting QB.
New York Giants Make A Change At Quarterback
It appeared during the offseason that the Giants would have a log jam at quarterback. Wilson and fellow veteran Jameis Winston were signed during free agency and expected to compete for the starting job, and New York spent a late first round pick on a rookie pass thrower from Ole Miss. It was unclear who the front-runner was heading into training camp, but Wilson ultimately won the job based on his experience and his performance during team practices.

That experiment didn’t last long. For the second time in the first three games, Russell Wilson threw for fewer than 170 yards on Sunday night. His throws were all over the place against the Chiefs’ defense, who picked him off twice and kept him from scoring through the air. Errant throws in the fourth quarter warranted boos from the home crowd, who were becoming impatient when it came to their team’s quarterback play.
Jaxson Dart Will Make His First NFL Start This Sunday
Head coach Brian Daboll and the rest of the organization heard the calls. In his comments on Monday, Daboll appeared to leave the door open to a quarterback change, avoiding saying that the job still belonged to Wilson. By midday Tuesday, the Giants officially announced that Wilson will be benched, and that Dart will get the start this coming Sunday in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Taken with the 25th overall pick back in April’s 2025 NFL Draft, Dart was the second quarterback selected after Cam Ward when first overall. He spent three years as the starter for Ole Miss, and finished as the program’s all-time leader in passing yards, surpassing Eli Manning.
The betting spread for Dart’s first start has the Giants listed as home underdogs, with the Chargers currently sitting as 5.5-point favorites.
