The New York Giants face a major dilemma at quarterback after Russell Wilson struggled in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Russell Wilson, Giants’ Offense Struggle In Loss

If Giants’ fans had any hype for the 2025 season, it ended after that dreadful performance in Washington.

It starts with Wilson, who completed 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards with zero touchdowns or interceptions.

The offensive line did not do a great job of protecting Wilson. However, Wilson turned into a shell of himself when under pressure, completing 2 of 12 passes for 26 yards with two sacks and two scrambles.

Wilson, 35, only averaged four yards per pass attempt.

The Giants failed to score a touchdown in Week 1 for the third year in a row. The Giants’ offense had two notable goal-to-go situations and ended those drives with field goals.

New York gained 231 yards of total offense and did not turn the ball over.

Wilson led the Giants in the ground game with 44 yards rushing on eight carries. Tyrone Tracy Jr. carried the ball 10 times for 24 yards, while Devin Singletary added nine yards. The Giants averaged 3.2 yards per rush.

Malik Nabers led the team with 71 receiving yards on five receptions. Nabers made some incredible plays on jump balls. Nabers was visibly frustrated on the sidelines and got into an argument with head coach Brian Daboll.

After the game, Daboll said the disagreement with Nabors was a non-issue and chalked it up to two competitive guys having a heated discussion.

The Giants’ defense held the Commanders’ high-flying offense to 21 points, though it could have been worse had it not been for New York’s pressure from the defensive line, which forced Jayden Daniels to rush several throws that led to incompletions.

Will Russell Wilson Start In Week 2?

After Wilson failed to impress in his Giants’ debut, will Daboll start the veteran in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys?

“Yes,” Daboll said when asked if Wilson would start in Week 2 via SNY Giants. “After a game, it’s an emotional game, tough game, didn’t play particularly well, I would say collectively, in terms of making any of those decisions, really at any position or schematic changes. I like to do it with a clear head and watch the tape.

“Again, like I said [Sunday], that game just doesn’t fall on Russell Wilson. We have to do a better job collectively — coaching, planning. But Russ will be the starter.”

Daboll has options to replace Wilson. Rookie Jaxson Dart is Wilson’s backup and will likely start multiple games this season for the Giants, especially if the team continues to struggle on offense.

Jameis Winston is also an option to replace Wilson.

If the Giants’ offense struggles against the Cowboys, expect a new quarterback when New York plays the Chiefs in Week 3.
