The Saints’ 1-5 record does not tell the entire story. New Orleans is losing games due to a talent disparity.
Kellen Moore has shown himself to be a solid coach so far this season. Despite having one of the worst offensive lines in the league (31st in pass block win rate and 32nd in run block win rate), the Saints have been winning or within one possession of the lead in the fourth quarter in five of six games.
The Saints are ranked 28th in scoring, but they will have opportunities to exploit a Chicago defense that allows the most yards per play in the league (6.5).
Spencer Rattler has been fine as the starter — 1,217 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception with a 60.2 QBR. Win totals should not be solely on the quarterback, but Rattler is 1-11 as a starter.
It was wet and ugly on Monday night, but the Bears found a way to escape Washington with a 25-24 win over the Commanders.
Did the Bears need some help to win? Absolutely. The elements played a factor in the fumble by Jayden Daniels that the Bears recovered to set up their game-winning drive. Luck is part of football, so credit to the Bears for taking advantage.
Caleb Williams is learning how to win under Ben Johnson. Williams, who finished 17 of 29 for 252 yards and one touchdown, is showing that he can do the little things — take care of the football, know when to throw it away, etc. — that lead to winning.
While the Bears deserve credit for winning, they could easily be 1-5 if the ball doesn’t bounce their way against the Commanders and Raiders.
Something’s got to give in this game. Either Rattler improves his abysmal underdog record (0-8 ATS as an underdog of under 10 points) or Williams plays well on short rest (0-4 SU on short rest).
Because of the number, I’ll take the Saints to cover in an ugly, low-scoring game.
