Jaxson Dart throws the ball on the run.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart capped off an impressive preseason with a terrific performance against the New England Patriots. Should Dart be the Giants’ Week 1 starter?

Jaxson Dart Looks Like A Franchise QB So Far

If a teacher were to grade Dart’s preseason, they would give him an “A.”

Dart completed 6 of 12 passes for 81 yards and one touchdown in Thursday’s 42-10 win over the New England Patriots.

Dart started hot from the opening possession, hooking up with Gunner Olszewski on a 50-yard catch-and-run on his first throw of the game. Later that drive, Dart threw a seven-yard laser to tight end Greg Dulcich for the touchdown.

Dart even showed off his mobility on a 23-yard scramble. However, Dart hit his head on the turf after failing to slide, forcing him to come out of the game.

Dart did not suffer a concussion, but head coach Brian Daboll was caught on camera telling his quarterback to slide. The first-round pick agreed with that sentiment, promising to slide in an Instagram post on his social media.

Overall, Dart impressed throughout the entire preseason. He finishes the preseason going 32 of 47 for 372 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Dart also ran for 52 yards and one touchdown.

It’s only the preseason. Many teams rest their starters, so most of the players on the field are backups.

However, it’s hard not to get excited about Dart becoming the Giants’ franchise quarterback after watching his preseason performances.

The Giants traded the No. 34 pick, the No. 99 pick, and a 2026 third-round pick to the Houston Texans for the No. 25 pick, which they used on Dart. The early returns on Dart are promising for head coach Brian Daboll, who hand-picked the Ole Miss product to be the team’s future at quarterback.

“We’re kind of on a day-to-day plan with the young quarterback. Every day we’re learning something,” Daboll said about Dart after the game via NFL.com. “We’ll keep on building him. I think [quarterbacks coach] Shea [Tierney] and [offensive coordinator Mike] Kafka have done a really good job with him. I think he’s done a good job, credit the player first and foremost. Being a rookie quarterback is not easy. Being a quarterback is not easy. So, he knows he’s got a lot of things to work on. But he’s made progress every day. I’m glad we drafted him. I’m glad he’s our guy.”

Daboll has remained steadfast that Russell Wilson will start the season for the Giants when they play the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Jameis Winston is still listed as the backup, with Dart as the third-string.

Because of his string of eye-opening performances, Dart could become the team’s new backup, and if Wilson struggles at any point this season, expect the rookie to hear his name called.
