San Antonio Spurs Devin Vassell Out Multiple Games With Left Adductor Strain

San Antonio Spurs forward Devin Vassell has been diagnosed with a left adductor strain after recently undergoing an MRI, the team announced Friday in a press release.

Devin Vassell Suffered Injury Against Cavs

Vassell, 25, sustained the injury in Monday’s home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 6-foot-5 guard finished with seven points on 3-of-10 (30%) shooting to go with four rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

Although the Spurs didn’t provide a timetable for Vassell’s return, head coach Mitch Johnson told reporters ahead of Friday’s game at Indiana that the former first-rounder will be sidelined for a couple of games.

“That will be more than a few games,” Johnson told Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News. “Just kind of have to continue to see how he ramps up and feels.

“We are encouraged by it in terms of, it should not be something that will be nagging him for the year. We just want to get him all the way right.”

Johnson added that Vassell stayed put in San Antonio for treatment.

“Obviously it’s a quick trip,” he said. “It was just wise to keep him home and to make sure he had all the resources and all the support he could from being there. We’re encouraged. We’re going to take it day-by-day.”

Vassell In Sixth NBA Season With Spurs

Vassell was selected 11th overall by the Spurs in the 2020 NBA draft out of Florida State.

In 38 games (32 starts) of the 2022-23 season, Vassell ranked in the top 15 in catch-and-shoot 3-point field goal percentage among 170 players to attempt at least 150 of those shots, according to Second Spectrum.

Vassell started each of San Antonio’s first 32 games of the 2025-26 campaign prior to sitting out Wednesday’s home win over the New York Knicks.

The Georgia native scored a season-high 35 points at Denver on Nov. 28.

He’s averaging 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 31.9 minutes per game while shooting 42.2% from the floor, 37.9% from 3-point territory, and a career-best 86.8% from the foul line.

Per Spotrac, Vassell is currently in the second season of a five-year, $135 million rookie-scale contract extension. He’s making $27 million this campaign and is slated to earn the same salary in 2026-27.

The Spurs host the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.
