WATCH Phoenix Suns Devin Booker Hits Game-Winning 3-Pointer Against Thunder

Phoenix Suns star guard Devin Booker will be reevaluated in one week after being diagnosed with a right groin strain, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.

Devin Booker To Miss First Games Of Season

Booker, 29, sustained the injury in Monday night’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers. The four-time All-Star will miss games against the Houston Rockets on Friday and Minnesota Timberwolves next Monday.

The former first-rounder could return as early as next Wednesday’s NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Booker has made the Suns a surprisingly competitive team this season, averaging 25.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 34.7 minutes per game through his first 22 appearances.

During the offseason, Booker solidified his future in Phoenix when he signed a two-year, $145 million maximum contract extension through the 2029-30 season, the highest annual extension salary in NBA history.

His annual extension salary ($72.5 million) surpassed reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s $285 million supermax extension ($71.25 million) for the richest ever.

Suns Thriving After Ending Big Three

Phoenix was expected to struggle this season after trading Kevin Durant and buying out Bradley Beal over the summer, but the club is off to a 13-9 start, good enough for the seventh spot in the Western Conference standings.

In addition to Booker’s injury, the Suns are still without Jalen Green, who has missed most of the season due to a right hamstring strain. Green landed in Phoenix over the summer as part of the historic seven-team Durant trade.

Per Charania, Green has dealt with a right hamstring injury since before the season, first injuring it during training camp and then aggravating it while the team was in China during the preseason.

Green missed the Suns’ first eight games before making his Phoenix debut in a Nov. 6 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. He scored 29 points in that game, the most by a Suns player in a franchise debut since Charles Barkley in 1992.

However, Phoenix did get Ryan Dunn back on Monday after he missed five games with a sprained wrist. Grayson Allen also returned to action on Saturday following a seven-game absence due to a quad injury.

Dunn and Allen are expected to play key roles for the Suns in Booker’s absence, as well as guards Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin. Another candidate for an increased role is Jamaree Bouyea, who logged a season-high 23 minutes on Monday.

Bouyea, 26, is averaging 6.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists through six games off the bench this campaign.
