The Swiss Indoors Basel ATP tournament has been devastated by player retirements. During three quarterfinal matches, Jakub Mensik, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Casper Ruud retired. To make matters worse, on Saturday, Ugo Humbert was forced to retire in the semifinals.

Fans watching this event have got to be mystified by the rash of retirements. Hopefully, the final is not decided by a player retirement because it is an interesting matchup between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain and Joao Fonseca of Brazil.
Fokina has never won an ATP title but came painfully close in Washington, DC this summer at the Mubadala Citi Open.
Fonseca won the Argentina Open earlier this year and has been rising in the rankings; this run in Basel will continue to help the cause.

The player retirements have been witnessed by some VIP guests related to Swiss tennis royalty.

Retirement Happened At WTA Japan Open Also
Elena Rybakina, after winning her quarterfinal match against Victoria Mboko and qualifying for the WTA Finals, withdrew from the semifinal match against Linda Noskova with a back issue. Noskova will try to win her first WTA title against the veteran Belinda Bencic.
Some criticized Rybakina, but the fact is she has played a lot of tennis during the Asian swing. She grabbed the last spot in the eight-person WTA Finals singles draw (eliminating Mirra Andreeva). Because she qualified so late, she is at a disadvantage in her preparation.
Anyone in her position, who has played a lot of tennis and is overcoming the wear and tear with a back injury, would withdraw with the year end tournament in sight.
