Sydney Sweeney Wants A Real Boxing Match After Filming Christy

Sydney Sweeney trained like a real fighter to play boxing legend Christy Martin in Christy, an upcoming biopic that will debut in theaters on November 7. But what started as prep for a film turned into something bigger. By the end of filming, the Hollywood starlet found a competitive edge, and says she’s genuinely considering stepping into a real boxing ring.

Sydney Sweeney Wants To Fight In A Charity Boxing Bout

While filming Christy, Sydney Sweeney started thinking less like an actress and more like a fighter. The physical training, the structure, and the mindset pulled her in. Somewhere in the middle of filming, she realized it wasn’t just acting anymore.

In an exclusive interview with SportsCasting, Sweeney admitted that she is seriously considering giving boxing a try.

“There was a moment in the middle of filming where I was like, ‘Should I give it all up and fight because I love this?’” she said.

What started as prep for a role became something else entirely. Sweeney said the idea of stepping into the ring isn’t as far-fetched as people might assume.

“Christy said she’d sign me up. So, this isn’t as hypothetical as you actually think it is. Yeah, I’d totally do a charity bout, that’d be so sick.”

She laughed when asked who she might face, but her answer hinted that something could already be in motion.

“It’s a surprise, you’ll have to wait, I’m serious. You gotta stay tuned for the pay-per-view and you’ll see it.”

Christy Martin, who trained with Sweeney and says she wants to be her promoter, backed that up with a quiet tease of her own.

“I have some names that we can’t throw out yet.”

Between Sweeney’s excitement and Christy’s comment, the idea of a real bout could be a little more than just talk.

Sweeney Spent Months Pounding Protein Shakes And Building Power

Before filming began, Sweeney had experience in kickboxing and grappling. But she said boxing was a different challenge entirely. The footwork, timing, and movement forced her to start from scratch.

She worked with several coaches, including strength trainer Grant Roberts, who trained Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby,  and boxing coach Matt Baiamonte. Her routine included multiple daily sessions over a two-and-a-half-month span.

“For about two and a half months, I would weight train in the morning for an hour, box three hours in the middle of the day, and then another hour of weight training at night,” Sweeney said. “I put on 35 pounds and it was hard. I started losing weight once I upped my boxing time and had to find that balance, just continually pounding more and more protein shakes.”

The challenge wasn’t just building mass. It was keeping it on while boxing multiple hours a day. Sweeney said the process completely changed how she approached fitness.

She Can Take A Punch And Refuses To Quit

Sweeney’s favorite weapon in the ring became her left hook. She drilled it daily and said she became obsessed with perfecting the motion. But it wasn’t just about throwing punches. Learning how to take them mattered just as much.

“I loved it. I worked hardest on that left hook,” she said. “And I think what would get me through a fight is that I can take a punch. I wouldn’t quit.”

That resilience, she said, was what made her believe she could actually hang in a real match. Technique mattered, but not giving up mattered more.

Sweeney Says Boxers Are Already In Her DMs

No professional trainers have reached out to help her prepare for an actual bout. But she says boxers have found their way into her DMs.

“Nobody’s offered to get me into the ring,” Sweeney said. “I have gotten some interesting DMs from some boxers though.”

She didn’t elaborate on the contents, only that the messages weren’t related to fight camps or sparring. Who are we to speculate on the contents of those messages?

Could Sydney Sweeney Actually Step Into The Ring?

If Sweeney ever does fight, it would almost certainly be a charity or exhibition event. That would allow her to train intensively without taking a break from acting. Her boxing base, her conditioning, and her willingness to put herself through authentic fight training make her a believable candidate for a celebrity bout.

She has already shown the discipline, toughness, and presence needed to compete. After months of real boxing work for Christy, Sydney Sweeney now has both the look and mindset of someone who could hold her own in a ring.

Whether she ever fights or not, she’s already proven that not only can she play a boxer, but she can train and fight like one too.
