The 2024-25 NBA season has been full of surprise transactions and movement, and you can add Taylor Jenkins’ dismissal to the list. On Friday, the Memphis Grizzlies announced that they would be relieving their head coach of his duties after nearly six full years on the job.

Grizzlies Fire Taylor Jenkins With 9 games Left In Regular Season

It is one of the more oddly-timed coach firings that we have ever seen. Jenkins becomes the second NBA head coach to be fired mid-season this year, joining Mike Brown’s dismissal from the Sacramento Kings back in December. But Brown’s firing at least made sense from a timing standpoint, as the Kings had the second half of the season to turn things around.

Jenkins’ firing comes with the Grizzlies having just nine games left on their regular season schedule, and for a team that is currently in fourth place in a highly competitive Western Conference playoff race. There hasn’t been an announcement on which assistant coach will be taking over for the rest of the season.

There hasn’t been an announcement about the reason for Jenkins’ firing, either. With the team performing well and his track record as the leader of the Grizzlies, it feels as though there is a deeper reason for the move than just the team wanting to bring in a fresh face. But whatever the reason may be, it is certainly a shocking development.

Taylor Jenkins was hired by Memphis prior to the 2019 season, and has been with the franchise ever since. He ends his time as the second-longest tenured head coach in franchise history, and easily holds the record for most coaching victories with the team. He finishes with an overall record of 250-214, including three playoff appearances. The only Grizzlies coach that ever had a better winning percentage was Dave Joerger.

His role with the Grizzlies was the first ever head coaching job for Jenkins after his time as an assistant, and he will be one of the hotter names for the upcoming coaching cycle at just 40 years old.
