After months of negotiations, Higgins and the Bengals could not agree on a long-term extension by Monday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.
This means that Higgins will play on the one-year franchise tag in 2024. Higgins’s franchise tender is worth $21.8 million this season.
With the deadline passed, Higgins cannot sign a long-term extension with the team this season. The earliest Higgins can sign an extension with the Bengals is after the final game of the regular season.
Higgins requested a trade from the Bengals after being franchise-tagged in March. However, Higgins later changed his tune, signing the franchise tender on June 17.
Higgins plans to play for Cincinnati this season.
Without an extension, Higgins becomes the only player out of eight to receive the franchise tag this offseason and not agree to a long-term deal. Five tagged players signed with their respective teams, while Carolina traded Brian Burns to the Giants, and Kansas City moved L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans.
Burns and Sneed agreed to multiyear deals with the Giants and Titans, respectively.

It is unlikely Higgins will be tagged again next offseason, meaning he will become a free agent.
Will Higgins be a member of the Cincinnati Bengals for the 2025-2026 season?
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this will probably be Higgins’s last year with the Bengals.
“In all probability, he [Higgins] will leave Cincinnati after this season,” Schefter said on Monday’s Pat McAfee Show.
Selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Higgins has become the Bengals’ No. 2 pass-catching option behind Ja’Marr Chase.
In four seasons, Higgins has registered 257 catches for 3,684 yards and 24 touchdowns.
