TGL TV Ratings: Tiger Woods Matches Averaging 947,500 Viewers

The TGL is off to a hot start four matches to its inaugural season, thanks in large part to the presence of Tiger Woods. The new indoor golf league averaged 824,000 viewers during yesterday’s broadcast, up 27% from the prior week. The match featured Woods’ team squaring off against Rory McIlroy’s squad with Jupiter Links Golf Club emerging with a 4–3 overtime victory against Boston Common Golf.

The broadcast peaked with 1.1 million viewers during overtime, which featured a best-of-three closest-to-the-pin chipping contest.

Similar to the PGA Tour, pace of pay has been an issue, even indoors. Though Jupiter Links Golf Club prevailed, TGL ran over its two-hour time slot on ESPN once again by nearly 20 minutes, forcing a college basketball game to air on ESPNU.

TGL viewership numbers have been strong through four matches, especially for a brand new league. The league debuted with strong showings in back-to-back weeks, tallying nearly 2 million viewers through its first two matches. After drawing only 682,000 viewers in the previous week, a season-low mark, TGL bounced back with 864,000 viewers in the matchup between Woods and McIlroy.

All matches have aired on ESPN. According to the network, both of Woods’ matches have peaked at approximately 1.1 million viewers. Tiger Woods’ matches have averaged approximately 947,500 viewers, 18.3% higher than matches without him and 8.4% higher than the average TGL match.

While TGL isn’t ready to overtake the PGA Tour in terms of TV ratings, it is already performing well ahead of schedule, especially compared to LIV Golf, which struggled to draw viewers consistently in its first two seasons.

Last season, the final round of LIV Golf’s debut tournament at Mayakoba averaged 432,000 viewers, the most ever in league history.

Currently, TGL is on pace to average twice as many viewers.
