The 49ers Are In Serious Trouble After Fred Warner Injury

Just when they thought that things couldn’t get worse on the injury front, the San Francisco 49ers may have lost arguably their most important player for an extended period of time.

Injuries Mount Yet Again For 49ers In Week 6

During the first half of San Francisco’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, All-Pro middle linebacker Fred Warner had his right leg rolled up on. It resulted in what appeared to be a gruesome injury. Warner had his lower leg placed in an air cast as he was loaded onto a medical cart, and it was immediately clear that the situation would be a serious one.

There likely won’t be any official word released on his status until Monday, but hopes are not high for receiving any good news.

If Warner is out for months, or perhaps the rest of the season, it would be just the latest blow to a 49ers team that has been ravaged by injuries. While waiting for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to recover from last year’s torn ACL and MCL, guys like Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings were in and out of the lineup with various ailments.

In Week 1, the team lost talented tight end George Kittle who has not yet returned, which was followed by pass rusher Nick Bosa suffering a season-ending injury as well. To make things even worse, quarterback Brock Purdy, who signed a $265 million contract during the offseason, has played in just two games so far in 2025.

Can The Defense Stay Afloat Without Warner & Bosa?

Without the services of Warner (and the rest of the players on the injured list), the 49ers came up short on Sunday. After traveling across the country for Week 6, they lost to Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers by a score of 30-19. It was the most points San Francisco has given up in a game so far this season.

If the team’s worst fears are realized, and Warner is out for the year, the team’s defense will have trouble filling the massive shoes that he and Bosa leave behind. The 49ers haven’t had more than 1 sack in any game since Week 2, and the rest of their defensive shortcomings were exposed during the second half against Tampa Bay.

After starting 3-0, the 49ers have now lost 2 of their last three games, and will be trying to right the ship in prime time next week. They will play host to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7, and the game will be played on Sunday Night Football.

San Francisco is locked into a three-way tie with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams for first place in the NFC West.
