The Chargers Are Off To Their Best Start In 23 Years

Thanks to their win against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, the Los Angeles Chargers are now 3-0 on the young 2025 NFL season. Being undefeated through the first three weeks is an unfamiliar place for the franchise, and it is the first time that they’ve accomplished the feat since 2002.

Chargers 3-0 For First Time Since 2002

The Chargers have had some successful seasons over the past quarter-century. During that time span, they’ve notched seven seasons with double-digit victories, and won nine games on six other occasions.

But they only had undefeated starts through their first three games one time.

The year was 2002, fifteen years before the team would leave San Diego and move up the road to Los Angeles, Quarterback Drew Brees was in his second year in the NFL and his first as a full-time starter. It was the first year with the team for head coach Marty Schottenheimer, and the roster featured names like Junior Seau, Tim Dwight, and Rodney Harrison.

That season, the Chargers won their first three games by a combined score of 81-24, and it looked as though they’d be one of the teams to beat in the NFL. They even jumped out to 4-0, and a 6-1 mark by the time their bye week rolled around.

But Brees’ Chargers would post a record of 2-7 down the stretch, finishing at 8-8 and out of the postseason.

Can Jim Harbaugh’s Team Keep Stacking Wins?

This year’s team is hoping to have a different fate. The Chargers aren’t exactly dominating, as two of their three wins have been one-score affairs. But under head coach Jim Harbaugh, they are finding ways to win, with consistent performances on both sides of the ball.

Los Angeles could be a dark horse Super Bowl candidate at this point, and could remain there based on their schedule. According to the strength of remaining opponents, the Chargers have the 7th-softest remaining schedule, as they have a handful of games to play against teams that are currently 0-3.

They have a solid shot at moving to 4-0. The Week 4 game for the Chargers will come against the New York Giants, who are 0-2 heading into their Week 3 Sunday Night Football contest against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Quarterback Justin Herbert had his second 300+ yard game of the season against the Broncos, and now has five touchdowns on the season compared to zero interceptions.
