NFL Changes Flex Rule For Thursday Night Football

The NFL is tweaking its rules for Thursday Night Football.

Per Tom Pelissero, the NFL owners have approved a reduction of the window for notifying teams about flexing Thursday night games.

When the rule was approved before the 2023 season, the window was set for 28 days.

Now, the rule has changed to 21 days.

Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president of media distribution, says the league will use the right to change the Thursday Night game “judiciously.”

“Certainly, there are some people that are still not the biggest fans of it,” Schroeder said. “But an overwhelming number of membership approved it. We’re excited to have it. We think it’s a win for our fans and for Amazon moving forward.”

How Many TNF Games Have Been Flexed?

Since the rule went into effect, only one game has been flexed to Thursday.

Last season, the NFL flexed the Week 16 game between the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The game moved from Sunday afternoon to Thursday night.

Only Thursday night games between Weeks 13 and 17 can be flexed. No team will be required to flex to a Thursday night game more than once.

The Thursday night flex can only be used twice per season.
