Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert Suspended One Game Following Fifth Flagrant Foul

Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves were home Sunday to face the Spurs. It was their second of three meetings this season vs. San Antonio.

Minnesota overcame a 19-point deficit on Sunday to beat the Spurs 104-103. The Timberwolves are 26-14 after the win. Edwards led the team with 23 points and hit what would be the game-winner. In the fourth quarter of that win, starting center Rudy Gobert picked up a flagrant 1 foul. Timberwolves insider Charlie Walton reported that Gobert has been suspended one game due to his accumulation of flagrant fouls in 2025-26.

The Timberwolves will be without Rudy Gobert on Tuesday vs. the Bucks

In 2025-26, Rudy Gobert has started all 40 games the Timberwolves have played. The 33-year-old is averaging 11.0 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks. Against the Spurs on Sunday, January 11, Rudy Gobert was called for a flagrant 1 foul. It was determined that he had a reckless closeout of fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama. Gobert did not give Wembanyama enough space to land after a three-point attempt. Wembanayma slightly landed on Gobert’s foot on the way down. Luckily, he did not suffer another injury.

Through 40 games, Rudy Gobert has been assessed five flagrant fouls. Four of them are categorized as flagrant 1 fouls, and one is a flagrant 2. That occurred earlier in the season vs. the Suns. Together, he has six flagrant foul points in 2025-25. On Monday, the NBA announced that Rudy Gobert will serve an automatic one-game suspension. That will be Gobert’s first game missed this season. The Timberwolves will be on the road vs. Milwaukee.

If Rudy Gobert receives another flagrant foul in 2025-26, he will then serve an automatic two-game suspension. His counter will reset when the postseason begins. At 26-14, the Timberwolves are fourth in the Western Conference. The team needs Rudy Gobert on the court to play to their full potential. Gobert plays a key role for Minnesota.

Through 40 games, the Timberwolves continue to climb the NBA power rankings. Minnesota is 14-6 since the start of December. Additionally, the team is 6-4 in its last 10 games. The Timberwolves are only 1.5 games back from second place in the Western Conference. San Antonio owns second place in the West as of Monday. On Saturday, January 17, the Spurs and Timberwolves will meet for their third and final meeting in the 2025-26 regular season.
