Last season proved running backs remain crucial to a team’s success in the NFL.
Despite talk that the running back position was dwindling and not as important, last year proved otherwise.
Saquon Barkley led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. Last year, he recorded 2,005 rushing yards, 13 rushing TDs, 33 receptions, 278 receiving yards, and two receiving TDs.
Derrick Henry had 1,921 rushing yards and 16 rushing TDs last season.
Barkley, Henry, and other running backs quieted the noise on downgrading the importance of a good running back.
The 2025 NFL Draft is approaching, and there is a potential generational back in this year’s draft.
Top Five Running Backs In The 2025 NFL Draft
The running back position is back to being coveted by NFL teams after last season.
Below are the top five running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft.
1. Ashton Jeanty, Boise State
Ashton Jeanty has been touted as a generational talent. A can’t miss product. Jeanty is an explosive, strong runner who is tough to tackle, routinely showcasing the ability to run through defenders. While he had quite the workload over three seasons, Jeanty is by far the best back in the 2025 NFL Draft and is a possible generational player.
2. TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State
TreVyon Henderson has great vision as a runner, good hands in the pass game, and excels as a blocker in pass protection. Henderson ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. He recorded at least 100 scrimmage yards in three of Ohio State’s four College Football Playoff games this past season. Henderson averaged 7.1 yards per carry and 7.6 yards per touch overall. Henderson has the tools to play at a very high level in the NFL.
3. Omarion Hampton, North Carolina
Omarion Hampton has the potential to be a bell cow in the NFL. He has good patience to hit the hole and burst through it. Hampton rushed for 3,565 yards with 36 touchdowns over three seasons. He is also a capable receiver, accounting for 2,033 yards from scrimmage this past season while scoring 17 total touchdowns. Hampton possesses the skills needed to excel in the NFL.
4. Quinshon Judkins, Ohio State
Quinshon Judkins had 2,725 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns in two seasons before moving to Ohio State. Last season, he had 1,060 rushing yards. Judkins is a physical runner, which helps him run through tackles. He showed up in big games and tough competition. He has room to improve as a pass catcher, but Judkins has the potential to excel from the jump as a natural runner.
5. Cam Skattebo, Arizona State
Cam Skattebo had 1,711 rushing yards this past season and 21 rushing TDs. He added 605 receiving yards and three receiving TDs. Skattebo was second in college last year in forcing missed tackles. The only knock is his speed, but Skattebo is a three-down back that can handle a heavy workload.
