The Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins were involved in a National Hockey League transaction on Sunday afternoon. The Canucks traded goaltender Arturs Silovs of Riga, Latvia to the Pittsburgh Penguins for right wing prospect Chase Stillman of St. Louis, Missouri and a fourth round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.
Trade Grades
Tbe Penguins won this transaction. I would give them a grade of B. Silovs was instrumental in leading the Vancouver Canucks to a first round playoff win over the Nashville Predators in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He had 28 saves for the 1-0 shutout in game six of the series, in a series-clinching game that the Canucks won thanks to a late third period game-winning goal by forward Pius Suter of Zurich, Switzerland. Â Then this past season, Silovs shared his time with the Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League and Vancouver Canucks. Even though Silovs only won two regular season games, he was a key reason why the Abbotsford Canucks won the 2025 Calder Cup.
The Canucks would get a grade of C. They have two credible goaltenders in Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen, but a solid goaltender in the system could have been necessary because of the injury issues to Demko and Lankinen in the past.
There is also a feeling that the Canucks could have got more for Silovs. Chase Stillman, who is the son of former NHL winger Cory Stillman, has not yet played a NHL game. Last season he only had 12 points in 65 games with the Utica Comets and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League.
Silovs’s Statistics
Silovs had a regular season record with the Canucks in 2024-25 of two wins and six regulation losses and one loss in extra time, with a goals against average 3.65 and a save percentage of .861. Silovs beat the Chicago Blackhawks on November 16 by a score of 4-1 thanks to 28 saves, and the Blackhawks again on March 15 by a score of 6-2 thanks to 17 saves.
Could the Penguins now trade Tristan Jarry?
There is growing speculation at this time that the Penguins could trade goaltender Tristan Jarry of Surrey, British Columbia. One possible team that could be interested are the Edmonton Oilers. Jarry has a connection to Edmonton as it is here where he played for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League. Still, the two-time NHL All-Star only had a goals against average of 3.12 and save percentage of .892 this past season.
