With training camp set to begin next week, the Bucs received a disappointing update involving their best lineman.
Per Rick Stroud, Wirfs underwent surgery on his right knee on Tuesday and will miss the beginning of the regular season. The Buccaneers will likely put Wirfs on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. If Wirfs is on the PUP list, he will miss at least the first four weeks.
Wirfs missed one game last season with a right knee injury. However, Wirfs aggravated the knee this offseason, and the Bucs scheduled arthroscopic surgery to care for the injury.
Losing Wirfs is a massive blow for the Buccaneers’ offense. Wirfs is a two-time First-Team All-Pro selection (2021, 2024) and one-time Second-Team All-Pro choice (2022).
Wirfs is the only player in NFL history to be named First-Team All-Pro at both right tackle and left tackle.
The 26-year-old has made four consecutive Pro Bowls.
Before the 2024 season, Wirfs signed a five-year, $140.63 million contract extension. Wirfs is the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league, with an average annual salary of $28.13 million (per Overthecap).
Wirfs is arguably the game’s best tackle, too. The tackle has played an instrumental part in Baker Mayfield’s resurgence. Wirfs allowed zero sacks and only 13 QB pressures in 2024.
The Bucs will likely turn to Charlie Heck as a temporary replacement for Wirfs. Tampa signed Heck from the San Francisco 49ers earlier this offseason.
