Ven-Allen Lubin Eyes Transfer Portal Exit: St. John’s, Illinois Strong Fits If He Leaves UNC

Ven-Allen Lubin has entered the transfer portal — but not because of playing time or a coaching issue. He’s still open to staying at UNC. His decision is tied to upcoming NCAA changes that could affect roster spots across the country.

The NCAA is expected to approve a multibillion-dollar settlement that would allow schools to share revenue with athletes. Part of that deal includes new roster limits on how many athletes can be paid. These are separate from traditional scholarship caps. Until the rules are finalized, some players — like Lubin — are entering the portal to protect their options. He’s not necessarily leaving, but he’s preparing for the possibility.

Lubin would also benefit from the spotlight of playing in New York and could thrive in Pitino’s fast-paced, defensive-minded system. His ability to switch defensively and score efficiently inside fits well with what St. John’s is building.

Illinois in the Hunt for Lubin

✅ Lubin fits Brad Underwood’s style of tough, physical forwards.
✅ Could be used as a small-ball five or traditional four depending on lineup.

Illinois would give Lubin a chance to play meaningful minutes on a team that expects to compete in the Big Ten right away. It’s a high-floor, high-responsibility role that makes sense if he’s looking for stability and structure.
