Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has had several meetings with head coach Steve Kerr ahead of the Feb. 8 trade deadline, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Friday.
Jonathan Kuminga, Steve Kerr Not On Same Page
Before the season, Kuminga finally agreed to a two-year, $46.8 million deal with the Warriors to end a prolonged contract stalemate. As part of the deal, he waived his inherent no-trade clause.
The club option in the second year is designed for either Golden State or another team if and when Kuminga is traded before the deadline this season.
League sources across the league are expecting the Warriors to trade Kuminga.
Chris Haynes:
“(Rival teams) do not expect Jonathan Kuminga to still be a member of the Golden State Warriors past the trade deadline. (JK and Steve Kerr) just haven’t been on the same page” pic.twitter.com/mWalYnLIxr

“There are rival teams out there that believe that once Jan. 15th comes — that’s when Kuminga can be traded — they do not expect him to still be a member of the Golden State Warriors past the trade deadline. So, he is a name to watch as this time goes on,” Haynes said.
“Kuminga has been very frustrated. I was told he’s had numerous meetings with Steve Kerr, and those two just haven’t been on the same page. At some point after Jan. 15th, rival executives expect Kuminga and the Warriors to part ways via a trade.”
Kuminga’s Play Has Been Underwhelming
HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported last week that Kuminga is “considered one of the top trade candidates across the league in the eyes of NBA executives,” despite his inconsistent play.
After starting the first 12 games of the season, Kuminga was demoted to a bench role due to on-court struggles. The 6-foot-7 wing was then sidelined for seven games due to bilateral knee tendonitis.
Following a return to action in late November, Kuminga appeared in four games in a row, making another start on Dec. 6 in Cleveland, but he has been a DNP-CD in five of Golden State’s past seven games.
Through 18 games appearances (13 starts) this season, Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, a career-high 2.4 turnovers, and 24.8 minutes per outing while shooting a career-low 43.1% from the field.
Kuminga Still Practicing With Warriors
Kuminga told ESPN’s Anthony Slater earlier this month that his knee injury and early season struggles haven’t changed how he feels about playing for the Warriors.
“I don’t have any problems,” Kuminga said. “I’m going to work out every day, stay ready, because you never know how these things works. I believe in my game and feel good about my game. I just got to be a professional. Things happen. It’s happened before.”
Kuminga, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 24.3 minutes per contest in 47 games (10 starts) last season.
The 6-foot-8 wing is currently in his fifth season.
