Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee and will be reevaluated “in the coming days,” the team announced Sunday.
MRI Confirmed Injury For Jonathan Kuminga
Kuminga exited Golden State’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the second quarter on Thursday after twisting his left ankle and hyperextending his left knee. He underwent an MRI on Friday.
Prior to Jimmy Butler suffering a season-ending ACL tear last week, Kuminga hadn’t played in 16 straight games. The 6-foot-7 wing also missed seven games in November due to bilateral knee tendonitis.
Kuminga made his return on Tuesday against the Raptors, scoring 20 points in 21 minutes of action, then had 10 points in nine minutes at Dallas before leaving with the injury.

Despite Butler’s injury, the former first-rounder reportedly still wants a trade out of the Bay Area, per NBA insider Chris Haynes. Kuminga demanded a trade on Jan. 15 when he became eligible to be traded.
“Kuminga has no desire to remain a member of the Golden State Warriors,” Haynes said. “I’m told that his relationship with head coach Steve Kerr is fractured beyond repair. He’s felt that he hasn’t had any organizational support throughout this process. So, he’s felt devalued with the organization.”
Warriors Still Trying To Trade Kuminga
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors are hoping to get a return package that will help them win now without committing to long-term deals.
“League sources said the Warriors have been prioritizing expiring contracts in return for Kuminga. They’ve declined the idea of taking back long-term contracts unless they view it as no-brainer positive value. That’s been the hold up in conversations with Sacramento,” Charania and Slater wrote.
However, Kuminga’s latest injury prevents the 23-year-old from boosting his trade value before the Feb. 5 deadline. It’s also unclear whether Golden State will be able to move the five-year veteran next month.
Although the Lakers, Bulls, and Mavericks have expressed interest in Kuminga, league sources say the Kings remain the only “legitimate” suitor at this juncture.
Through 20 appearances (13 starts) this season, Kuminga is averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 23.8 minutes per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 32.1% from 3-point range.
The Warriors are scheduled to play at Minnesota on Sunday and Monday, then at Utah on Wednesday.
