The horror hit of the year might turn out to be Weapons, a new mystery from writer and director Zach Cregger. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Will that translate to box office success? View the box office odds and predictions for Weapons.
What Is Weapons About?
Prepare for the unexpected in Weapons.
The town of Maybrook is stunned to learn that 17 children left their homes early one morning. These children voluntarily left their houses and started running in the streets, only to mysteriously vanish.
All 17 children were students of Justine Gandy (Julia Garner). Only one student in Gandy’s class, Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher), did not disappear.
Now, the community wants answers as to what happened to their children. Why did the students all stem from Ms. Gandy’s classroom? Why did all but one student disappear?
These are the questions that will hopefully be answered by the time the credits roll at the end.
Cregger directs from his own screenplay and produces alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J. D. Lifshitz, and Raphael Margules. Weapons is Cregger’s first movie since Barbarian, his breakout hit in 2022.
Weapons opens in theaters on August 8, 2025.

Warner Bros., which will distribute the film under its New Line Cinema banner, believes Weapons will be a big hit. Weapons was originally scheduled to be released on January 16, 2026. However, Warner Bros. pushed Weapons up to August 2025, signaling its belief in the film’s box office chances.
Fans are also clamoring to see Weapons. Per Fandango, Weapons is the second-best horror ticket pre-seller of 2025. With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Weapons could dominate the month of August due to a lack of competition.
Weapons is currently tracking for a $25 million debut, but the pre-sale numbers suggest it could come in much higher. Made for only $38 million, Weapons could make back its budget in one weekend.
If Weapons opens to over $39 million (-113), Cregger can name his price for his next original movie after completing Resident Evil.
Update: Weapons opened to $42.5 million (-113) at the domestic box office.
