There were two transactions completed in the NFL on Tuesday. Both Davante Adams and Amari Cooper have found new homes this week as they were traded to the Jets and Bills, respectively, after both players had been involved in trade rumors recently. But while the flurry of action may look like the teams are trying to get off their last-minute deals, the actual trade deadline for the 2024 season is still three weeks away.

NFL Trade Deadline Still 3 Weeks Away

The deadline used to come earlier in the season. Up until 2012, teams had to make their final transactions in the couple of days following the Week 6 action. But the league and the NFLPA made a change a little over ten years ago, and teams now have until 4pm Eastern on the Tuesday after Week 8 to get their necessary deals done.

This year, that exact date falls on November 5th.

Unlike the NBA and MLB, there hasn’t been a ton of notable moves made at the trade deadline in the history of the league. There have been, at best, just a handful of notable deadline deals throughout NFL history, though the most infamous one happens to be one of the biggest trades in league history. It was at the deadline in 1989 when the Dallas Cowboys traded away Herschel Walker, which to this day remains the largest transaction that the league has ever seen (18 total players and picks).

Still Finding Out Who Is Buying And Selling

The extended time gives teams an opportunity to decide whether they are buyers or sellers, as Week 6 is often too early in a season for a team to make a decision on if they are punting on the year. We may see an uptick in transactions over the next 21 days of 2024, as there are reports of some big names potentially becoming available for teams that have failed to meet expectations so far this year.

Aside from the Adams and Cooper deals, the only trade that has been made during the season so far was the Jaguars shipping Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seahawks in exchange for a 6th round draft pick.
