Will Italian Tennis, Led By Jannik Sinner And Jasmine Paolini, Run The Table At The Cincinnati Open?

The Cincinnati Open semifinal weekend has finally arrived, but it could be confused with the Italian Open since the Italian tennis players are in the hunt for all of the major titles including Jannik Sinner and Jasmine Paolini along with Sara Errani, Lorenzo Musetti, and Lorenzo Sonego.

WTA Singles Semifinals

Jasmine Paolini has recently had Coco Gauff’s number. After beating her at the Italian Open, Paolini came from behind to win in the Cincinnati quarterfinals on Friday. Paolini will play the surging Veronika Kudermetova in Sunday’s semifinals.

The other semifinal is Iga Swiatek vs. Elena Rybakina.

ATP Singles Semifinals

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Saturday, will be on court against the qualifier Terence Atmane. Atmane has already defeated another Italian, Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, and Holger Rune in his magical week of tennis.

The other semifinal is Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev. Zverev is the 2021 Cincinnati Open champion.

WTA Doubles Semifinals

Jasmine Paolini is doing double duty in the late rounds of this year’s Cincinnati Open. She and partner Sara Errani will play Guo Hanyu and Alexandrova Panova in Saturday’s doubles semifinal.

Paolini and Errani are the top seeds, and the second seeded team of Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski have already booked their spot in the Cincinnati Open final with a semifinal win on Friday.

Routliffe is the defending champion who won the title last year with American Asia Muhammad. Paolini and Errani have never won this title.

ATP Doubles Semifinals

Team Lorenzo, consisting of the Italians Musetti and Sonego, play the British team of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in Saturday’s semifinals.

The other semifinal features the hottest men’s doubles team in tennis: Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. Cash and Glasspool are riding a 22 match winning streak that includes title wins at Eastbourne, Queen’s Club, Wimbledon, and Toronto. Rajeev Ram and Nikola Mektic are their opponents in the Cincinnati Open semifinals who will try to end their winning summer ways.

Italian tennis is in the mix for all four titles at the Cincinnati Open. How many will they win? Could they run the table and grab all of them along with the momentum leading into the US Open?
