Wimbledon Day 3: Fritz, Anisimova, and Keys Win, Rest Of Americans Lose

The opening rounds of Wimbledon have been brutal for ranked players and Americans. On Day 3, 9 Americans were in action, and only 3 advanced.

Taylor Fritz Won In 5 Sets, Again

Fritz is finding his mojo at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, but unfortunately, it is taking five sets per round.  On Wednesday, he faced his second 6’8″ opponent, Canadian Gabriel Diallo.

This five set affair thankfully did not start with Taylor Fritz losing the first two sets, but it was briefly suspended.  There were fears that it would be another two-day match as his first round win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was.  Alas, Fritz got it done on Wednesday. The American, World No. 4, will play again appropriately on July 4.

Amanda Anisimova Wins

Because of the high profile losses of Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Jasmine Paolini, no one is really paying attention to Amanda Anisimova who won her first round match 6-0, 6-0.  On Wednesday, she lost seven games, but completed the straight set win, 6-4, 6-3.

On July 4, Anisimova will next face World No. 110 Dalma Galfi of Hungary who defeated Harriet Dart and Beatriz Haddad Maia in her first two rounds.

Madison Keys Wins

Madison Keys defeated left handed Serbian Olga Danilovic in straight sets.  There was concern that Danilovic could be a tricky opponent for Keys who traditionally does not perform as well against left handers.

Keys has a July 4 match with Laura Siegemund who took out Peyton Stearns and Leylah Fernandez in her first two rounds.

Everybody Else Loses

Taylor Fritz, Amanda Anisimova, and Madison Keys were the bright spots in an otherwise dismal day for Americans at Wimbledon.  Ethan Quinn, Learner Tien, Jenson Brooksby, Frances Tiafoe, Ashlyn Krueger, and Ann Li lost.

12 Americans play Wimbledon second round matches on Thursday, 7 women and 5 men.  Two of the men play each other (Brandon Nakashima and Reilly Opelka).  Hopefully, it is a day marked with more American wins.
