Wimbledon Day 8 ATP Roundup: Grigor Dimitrov Was Not The Only Player Injured In His Match

The tennis world is beside itself over Grigor Dimitrov’s injury that caused him to retire from his Wimbledon match against Jannik Sinner when he was up two sets.  Injuries are bad at every stage of a match, but no one wants to see it when Dimitrov, one of the most beloved guys on the ATP Tour, gets hurt when he could have been nearing the finish line against the World No. 1.

As we collectively grieve and wonder why Dimitrov has such bad luck with injuries (this is the fifth consecutive Grand Slam he has been forced to retire from because of injuries), an interesting fact has emerged.

Jannik Sinner Was Also Injured

Sinner was the consummate classy guy and good sportsman who was also gutted by Dimitrov’s injury.  He barely even wanted to do the post match interview.  When he did, he spent the time talking about Dimitrov.

A short while later, we learned that Sinner will be getting an MRI on Tuesday on his elbow. This elbow issue is a result of a fall early in the Dimitrov match. He took a medical timeout to get treatment, but it was somewhat forgotten after Dimitrov’s issues surfaced and the match ended the way it did.

Ageless Novak Djokovic Looked Great

Even though Djokovic’s age is a constant conversation piece, he has looked great at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. His four set win over Alex de Minaur which started slowly and poorly with a 1-6 opening set loss to de Minaur was impressive.

Tennis pundits have long said that Djokovic’s best chance at another Grand Slam would be on the grass at Wimbledon, and so far, he is looking up to the task to take on the guys that are 10-15 years younger than he is.

Two American And Italian Men Are Left

American Ben Shelton defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonnego. He joins Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. Could this be the year an American man wins a Grand Slam?  With two in the final eight, anything is possible.

Though Sonnego lost, Flavio Cobolli gave the Italian two players to cheer for in the quarterfinals after he defeated Marin Cilic in four tight sets, two were decided by tiebreakers.
