Wins have not come easily for the Wizards in 2025-26. The team is 5-23 through their first 28 games. Additionally, they are 3-7 in their last 10 and have lost two straight.Â
On Tuesday, NBA insider Shams Charania shared a report involving one of Washington’s players. Cam Whitmore had missed the Wizards’ previous two games due to shoulder soreness. Further testing revealed he had a blood clot in his shoulder. Whitmore was diagnosed with “upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.” The 21-year-old is out indefinitely.

In the 2023 NBA draft, Houston used the 20th overall pick to select Cam Whitmore out of Villanova. He spent the first two seasons of his professional career with the Rockets. During the 2025 offseason, Whitmore was traded to the Wizards. Washington traded two second-round draft picks to Houston to acquire Whitmore. In 2025-26, the 21-year-old has appeared in 21 of the team’s 28 games. However, Whitmore has missed seven consecutive shots for the Wizards.
Earlier in December, he was missing games because of DNPs. Cam Whitmore missed the last two games for the Wizards due to a shoulder injury. It was announced on Tuesday that Whitmore is dealing with a blood clot. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported he has deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. Cam Whitmore is out indefinitely for Washington.

Deep vein thrombosis is the same injury that caused Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama to miss significant time. Wembanyama missed the final 46 games of the 2024-25 season. He was diagnosed in late February and was not fully cleared until July. Additionally, Blazers’ Damian Lillard was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in March. He made a quick recovery and was back the next month.
Those are two extremely different recovery timelines. It’s unknown just how much time the young SF will miss. Washington currently owns the worst overall record in the NBA at 5-23. Cam Whitmore being out will not change much for the Wizards. The team has struggled all season.
