WTA Doha 2025: 3 Americans Remain After Coco Gauff Upset In Second Round

Iga Swiatek is vying for a fourth straight WTA Doha title at the 2025 Qatar TotalEnergies Open. Three Americans remain in the draw including Jessica Pegula, Sofia Kenin, and Amanda Anisimova. Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro, and Peyton Stearns have been eliminated.
Three-time Grand Slam champion, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, and 2024 Paris Olympics Gold Medalist Qinwen Zhenng were also ousted.
Can Pegula, Anisimova, or Kenin work through the draw and potentially challenge Swiatek? There is a lot of tennis to be played, and each player has a challenging Round of 16 match to prepare for on Wednesday, February 12.
1. Jessica Pegula vs. Daria Kasatkina
Jessica Pegula has historically played well in Doha. In 2023, she was the singles finalist and won the doubles title with Coco Gauff. However, she skipped the Middle Eastern swing last year because of an injury. Pegula is 2-1 head-to-head against Kasatkina, who won their most recent meeting on clay in three sets at the 2024 Charleston Open.
The winner of this match faces the winner of the Elise Mertens and Ekaterina Alexadrova match. Alexandrova is coming off her three-set upset over Sabalenka.
2. Sofia Kenin vs. Ons Jabeur
Ons Jabeur is healthy and enjoying a good start to the 2025 season; however, Sofia Kenin owns a 6-2 head-to-head record over her. Most of those matches happened before 2020. They split their last two meetings. Jabeur is a two-time Wimbledon finalist, and Kenin is the 2020 Australian Open champion and 2020 French Open finalist. This intriguing third-round matchup favors Jabeur if she brings her A-game.
The winner of this match faces the winner of the Jelena Ostapenko and Jasmine Paolini match.
3. Amanda Anisimova vs. Leylah Fernandez
Amanda Anisimova defeated Victoria Azarenka and Paula Badosa en route to the third round. Leylah Fernandez defeated Emma Navarro in the second round. They bring these huge confidence-building wins to their third-round match. Fernandez is 2-0 against Anisimova. They have not played each other since 2022.
The winner of this match faces the winner of the Marta Kostyuk and Magda Linette match. Kostyuk upset Gauff in straight sets.
