World No. 5 Mirra Andreeva, seeking a maiden spot in the 2025 WTA Finals for ladies’ singles, came up short in an intriguing three hour match against Laura Siegemund at the Wuhan Open on Tuesday.

Siegemund, 37, is well known for her doubles skills. Her defeat of Andreeva represents her third win over a Top 10 player in 2025. Among those was a victory over 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys at Wimbledon. It is her third ever singles appearance in the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament.
Mirra Andreeva won the first set via a tiebreaker but Siegemund dug in and took the next two sets. Andreeva battled her emotions and serving woes as Siegemund stayed the course.

Mirra Andreeva And The WTA Finals Race
Andreeva and her doubles partner Diana Shnaider have already qualified for doubles. She is trying to do what Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Jasmine Paolini have done in the past, qualify as a top eight player in both singles and doubles for the WTA Finals.
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, and Madison Keys have qualified. Andreeva, Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, and Ekaterina Alexandrova are in the mix for the remaining three spots.

1,000 points will be awarded to the winner of the Wuhan Open. With Paolini, Pegula, Rybakina, and Alexandrova in the draw, the race has just gotten tighter.
Andreeva’s 2025
Mirra Andreeva had a breakout 2025 with back-to-back WTA 1000 wins in Dubai and Indian Wells.
She is 40-14 in singles and 29-11 in doubles with Shnaider with wins at the WTA 1000 Miami Open and in Brisbane to kick off the year.
Her success was early in the season, and she has struggled since.
It is worth pointing out that she turned 18 during the season, and there will be plenty of refinements and maturity in her game and demeanor.
