Last season Alexander Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky as the National Hockey League all-time leader in goals with his 895th of his regular season career. Now on Wednesday, Ovechkin reached another milestone as he scored his 900th NHL goal in a 6-1 Capitals win over the St. Louis Blues. Here is the reaction on X.

Here is a replay of the goal. Ovechkin of Moscow, Russia scored on the backhand from defenseman Jakob Chychrun of Boca Raton, Florida at 2:39 of the second period to put the Capitals up 2-0 at the time. It was one of three assists in the game for Chychrun. It was also only the third goal of the season scored for Ovechkin. The first came in a 5-1 Capitals win over the Minnesota Wild on October 17 and the second came in a 5-1 Capitals win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 24.
Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington tried to keep the puck for Alex Ovechkin’s 900th goal 😅

In a rather bizarre circumstance Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington attempted to keep part of hockey history as a keepsake. It has been an awful start to the season for Binnington, who is playing himself off the Canadian Olympic team. He has a goals against average of 3.34 and a save percentage of .859.
The fact that Ovechkin decided to shoot this is the exact reason he has 900 goals pic.twitter.com/9cPGspCLli

The shot was from an awkward angle indeed. Not all of Ovechkin’s goals throughout his career have come from the faceoff circle.
Since making his NHL debut in 2005-06, Alex Ovechkin has scored 266 more goals than the next closest player:

Sidney Crosby – 634#ALLCAPS pic.twitter.com/T19ygtXtiM— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) November 6, 2025
This is an interesting statistic. Crosby’s 634 goals are 16th all-time. As for total points, Ovechkin has 1631 points, which is 11th all-time. Crosby is the active leader with 1704 points (ninth all-time).
“Every milestone is a special moment. Tonight’s obviously a special one to be the first player ever to do it.”
