X reacts to Penguins acquiring defenseman Mathew Dumba

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars made a transaction on Thursday. The Dallas Stars traded defenseman Mathew Dumba of Regina, Saskatchewan to the Penguins with a second round pick in the 2028 National Hockey League Entry Draft for Belarusian defenseman Vladislav Kolaychonok. Here is the reaction from X.

Dumba has been in the NHL since 2013. In the last 12 years, he has played with the Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Stars. In 737 games, Dumba has 1264 shots on goal and 1088 hits. However, it should be noted that he only had 57 shots on goal in 63 games all of last year.

The Stars signed Dumba to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million on July 1, 2024. Dumba made $3.75 million in 2024-25, and is set to make $3.75 million in 2025-26. It should be noted that Dumba did not play in any of the 18 postseason games for the Stars this past season. In Dumba’s prime, he was worth $3.75 million, but he only has a total of 36 points in the last three seasons.

Among the players the Stars have drafted in the second round over the years include right winger Jamie Langenbrunner of Cloquet, Minnesota, defenseman Trevor Daley of Toronto, Ontario, left winger Loui Eriksson of Gothenburg, Sweden, left winger James Neal of Whitby, Ontario, center Roope Hintz of Nokia, Finland, left winger Jason Robertson of Arcadia, California, and center Logan Stankoven of Kamloops, British Columbia.

It will now be interesting to see what the Stars do in free agency. Among the players still available are Victor Olofsson, Jeff Skinner, Max Pacioretty, and Jack Roslovic.

There is no doubt the Penguins have defense depth. It will be interesting to see if Dubas makes any more transactions before the season begins.
