The New York Yankees entered the 2025 MLB season as the favorite to defend their title of American League champions. They started off well, having jumped out to a 42-25 record, and maintained their status behind the Los Angeles Dodgers on the World Series odds board.
Yankees Have Gone Cold, Falling In AL East Standings
But Aaron Judge and company have gone ice-cold since mid-June, and the Yankees are now in a free fall in the AL East standings.
The team slump started with a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. It was the start of a six-game losing streak, something they didn’t endure a single time last season, but managed to win six of their next ten.
On May 25, the Toronto Blue Jays lost 13-0, had a 25-27 record and were in fourth place in the American League East.
On July 3, the Blue Jays finished a four-game sweep of the Yankees to move to 49-38 and took over first place in the AL East.
Five weeks can change everything.

Earlier this week, they visited Toronto for a four-game set against the Blue Jays. The series ended in a sweep, with the Yankees giving up 36 total runs. And now that they’ve dropped the first game in their current series against the crosstown Mets, the Bronx “Bombers” now have their second losing streak of 5+ games in the past 22 days.
Back on June 12th, the Yankees were in first place in their division. They were 4.5 games up on the second placed Blue Jays, and 6.5 up on the Tampa Bay Rays.
Now, as it stands on July 4th, the Yankees are tied with Tampa Bay in second place, 1.5 games behind Toronto. Before the Rays finished their game on Friday, there was a point when New York was in third place in the AL East.
The Yankees have lost 15 of their last 21 games.

After having the second-most wins in the entire American League at one point, they are currently a wild card team, four losses from being out of the playoff picture all together.
The loss in the first game of the series against the Mets was particularly rough to swallow. Juan Soto, who they let walk (across town), went 3 for 4 on Friday, and hit a home run in the first inning to drive in his two RBIs.
The struggles of Aaron Judge have been one of the reasons for the team’s slump. The reigning MVP was hitting .392 at the start of the losing skid, and is now down to .364.
After the Yankees finish up their three game set with the Mets, they’ll take on the Mariners and Cubs before the All-Star Break begins on July 14th.
