Super Bowl 57 certainly has its share of storylines. It’s a meeting of the top two teams in each conference, but there isn’t a whole lot of history between the teams.

The teams met last year in Week 3 in Philadelphia, where quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs outlasted the Philadelphia Eagles 42-30. Mahomes has only faced the Eagles once in his five years as a starter in the NFL. In fact, you have to go way back to Barack Obama’s first year as president, the days of the swine flu, and Michael Vick’s return to the NFL to when the Eagles last beat the Chiefs.

The Eagles hope to get their first win over the Chiefs since 2009 when they square off in Super Bowl 57

The Eagles and Chiefs meet in Super Bowl 57 after finishing with identical 14-3 records and earning the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences. Prior to last year’s Chiefs win, Kansas City also won the previous two matchups, claiming victory in 2017 and 2013.

You have to go way back to Sept. 27, 2009, to find the last time the Eagles defeated the Chiefs. In fact, the last Eagles coach to beat the Chiefs is Andy Reid, the current head coach of the Chiefs.

The Eagles entered that game with a 1-1 mark, and the Chiefs were winless at 0-2. Kevin Kolb was the quarterback for the Eagles, while Matt Cassel led the way for Kansas City.

Kolb filled in for an injured Donovan McNabb for the second straight week, even though it was Vick’s return to the league after serving 18 months in prison on a federal dogfighting charge. Vick got on the field for some gimmick plays, but Kolb stole the show.

Kolb became the first quarterback to throw for better than 300 yards in his first two starts. He threw for 391 yards in a 48-22 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. Against the Chiefs, Kolb was 24-for-34 for 327 yards and two touchdown passes as the Eagles cruised 34-14. McNabb returned the following game, as Kolb made just those two starts that season.

The Eagles and Chiefs have only met nine times

The teams have only faced each other nine times in history. The Chiefs own a 5-4 advantage, but the Eagles have outscored the Chiefs 219-218 in the series.

The first meeting came in 1972 when the Eagles pulled out a 21-20 victory, but then the Chiefs claimed the next two, winning in 1992 and 1998. Beginning with a 23-10 victory in 2001, the Eagles won three straight before the Chiefs halted that streak in 2013 with a 26-16 win and began their own three-game streak.

Although there’s not a ton of history between the teams, the series has been as close as you can get in nine games. You can expect more of the same for Super Bowl 57 as the Eagles enter as a 1.5-point favorite.
