By capturing back-to-back NASCAR Xfinity Series events and earning the Dash 4 Cash pay out Saturday, Justin Allgaier stole the spotlight at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Sam Mayer had his own reasons to appreciate a runner-up finish. Sure, his overtime re-start mistake may have cost Kyle Larson from winning the weekend trifecta, but his top-10 streak continues into next Saturday’s event at Martinsville Speedway. Unable to avoid a wreck and a P36 at Atlanta, Mayer placed seventh or better in his other five outings.
“We’re executing really, really well,” Mayer said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “Huge shoutout to these Haas Factory boys. They brought a really fast Ford Mustang. It’s a great day being bummed out with P2. Anytime that you finish in the top five and you’re kicking yourself, it’s obviously a good day.”
Challenging Truck Series event winner Larson throughout much of Friday night’s race, Mayer compiled 132 laps led Saturday before Allgaier earned the overtime Xfinity win. Mayer registered 15 stage points and led 22 laps.
Will Mayer learn from his re-start mishap?
During the Lap 199 restart, Larson, Allgaier, Mayer, Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed ran on the lead lap. Mayer lined up behind Larson, who attempted a slow restart, which confused the No. 41 Ford pilot. Eager to go, Mayer bumped Larson out of contention. The 2021 Cup champion won the Cup and Truck circuit races last weekend.
“I haven’t mistimed a restart like that in a long time,” Mayer said. “That’s why I’m so bummed out is because I know that for one, I ruined (Larson’s) race because obviously he’s going for the sweep and I took that away from him just by a silly mistake.”
