NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin didn’t lose a beat Saturday after missing last week’s event at Mexico City following the birth of his third child. Hamlin clocked a hot qualifying lap of 52.144 seconds to earn the pole position for Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400 Presented By VISITPA.com at Pocono Raceway.
Hamlin posted a P1 and P2 in his past two outings at the “Tricky Triangle.”
After registering a 52.227-second qualifying lap, Chris Buescher will start on the outside of the front row Sunday. Carson Hocevar (52.379 seconds), who has been criticized by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. recently for over-aggressive driving, will being third, next to John Hunter Nemechek (52.390).
Defending race winner Ryan Blaney (52.837) will start P20.
Circuit points leader William Byron paced the practice session, clocking the fastest rotation (52.706 seconds). Byron spun and crashed at the 2.5-mile tri-oval track during his qualifying run. The No. 24 Chevrolet will start P31.
Xfinity Series regular Brennan Poole posted last-place practice runs and did not earn a chance to qualify after NY Racing Team’s No. 44 Chevrolet failed tech inspection three times. A full-time Cup driver in 2020, Poole collected one top-10 finish in 42 career starts.
