On the first day of Wimbledon 2025, real life couple Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas were both upset in their first round matches. Tsitsipas’s loss is more troubling. He was forced to retire with a nagging back injury. This is a strange twist of fate considering Badosa battled a chronic back injury for years.
Paula Badosa Loses To Katie Boulter
Badosa was seeded ninth at this year’s Wimbledon. British player and fan favorite Katie Boulter, ranked 43th, defeated Badosa in three sets.
“This court is the epitome of what every single British child dreams about playing on, and actually winning on.” 🇬🇧

Paula Badosa made it to the fourth round in three previous Wimbledons including in 2024, as part of her resurgence after the back injury.
Stefanos Tsitsipas Retires
Tsitsipas lost the first two sets 3-6, 2-6 before retiring against French qualifier Valentin Royer, currently ranked World No. 113.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, a former Australian Open and French Open finalist, recently started working with Goran Ivanisevic. Given Ivanisevic’s grass court resume as a player (2001 Wimbledon champion), there were high hopes for his grass court season.
Men’s Seeds Fell
Stefanos Tsitsipas was not alone. The seeded men players were subjected to many upsets on Day 1. Holger Rune who won the first two sets of his match, Daniil Medvedev, Francisco Cerundolo, Alexei Popyrin, Tallon Griekspoor, and Matteo Berrettini lost. 32nd seed Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, lost in five sets to Kamil Majchrzak ranked 109th.

Two-time defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz needed five sets to avoid the upset against Italian Fabio Fognini in his final Wimbledon.
American Taylor Fritz is currently trying to come back after dropping the first two sets to French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
