What a relief.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Chase Elliott ended a 44-race winless streak last Saturday night at EchoPark Speedway. This may have ended the speculation that the 2020 circuit champion’s seat was in jeopardy with Hendrick Motorsports brass.
The Georgia native executed a last-lap pass to secure the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart title and celebrated with a burnout show before the home crowd.
With fireworks lighting up the night Atlanta sky, the relief on Elliott’s expression was evident during his post-race interviews. As reported by NBC Sports, he said his 20th career win was “up there for sure. A pretty surreal moment.”
Saturday night’s race featured just about everything. There were 45 lead changes, including nine over the final 35 rotations, and by Lap 110, 32 machines were involved in a collision.
On the final lap, Elliott rallied to P2 and received a push from teammate Alex Bowman, launching the No. 9 Chevrolet past Brad Keselowski, another winless veteran slumping in the standings.
“I’ll never take that for granted in those moments, especially to do that here at home,” said Elliott, who enters Sunday’s race at Chicago Street Race with +1400 sports-betting odds to win the Grant Park 165, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Shane van Gisbergen (+210) drew the top odds.

Grant Park 165 Storylines
- 23XI Racing still seeks its first win of the season. Co-owner Michael Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, cannot be content with his three primary pilots, Tyler Reddick (P4), Bubba Wallace (P22), and Riley Herbst (P28). With eight regular-season races remaining, only Reddick is positioned to earn a provisional spot.
- Erik Jones wrecked twice and still earned a P5 at Atlanta. “I’m happy with that,” he said, as reported by NBC Sports. Jones’ second top-five finish propelled the No. 43 Toyota team to No. 16 in the standings.
- Ricky Stenhouse Jr. placed P6 after failing to keep pace in the second stage. “Everyone was racing like it was the last lap,” he said. “It kind of caught me off guard.” The No. 47 Chevrolet rallied through the field during the final stage, taking the lead briefly with six laps to go,” until “we had a little issue on the last lap.”
