Tennis Fans Outraged After ESPN Airs Alcaraz Interview During Sabalenka-Raducanu Match At Wimbledon

Friday’s action at Wimbledon featured one of the best singles matches in the women’s draw with No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka taking on former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu.

In the second set, ESPN made a curious broadcasting decision to cut away from the live action in order to air a pre-recorded interview with men’s tennis star Carlos Alcaraz.

During the break from live action, Raducanu broke Sabalenka’s serve after pushing the world No. 1 to a tiebreaker in the first set, but tennis fans were forced to miss out on the drama.

As a result, several tennis fans expressed outrage on social media platform X to voice their displeasure with ESPN’s coverage of the Grand Slam.

ESPN Fuels Romance Rumors During Raducanu Match

The decision by ESPN was certainly a curious one, as rumors have swirled around a potential romance between Raducanu and Alcaraz in recent weeks.

In her pre-Wimbledon press conference, Raducanu was pressed about her relationship with Alcaraz. “We’re just good friends,” she replied, before the moderator quickly wrapped things up.

Even tennis star Nick Kyrgios, who is not playing at Wimbledon due to injury, shared his take on the potential rumors. In a recent interview, Kyrgios added fuel to the fire by calling the potential romance a “love triangle” between Raducanu, Alcaraz and British No. 1 Jack Draper.

“I don’t know, I think it’s a love triangle,” Kyrgios told TalkSPORT.

“Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They’re fighting over Raducanu I think.”

With the tennis world already buzzing about Raducanu’s personal life, ESPN’s decision to air the interview during her match feel all the more intentional.

Instead of highlighting one of the best women’s tennis matches of the day, the network prioritized stoking the romance rumors for ratings. The move was viewed by many fans as disrespectful to the athletes and distracting from the on-court action.

As Kyrgios put it in his interview, “The tennis world loves a love story.”

But at what expense? Kyrgios wasn’t shy about feeding the speculation either.

“Obviously, winning a grand slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectations from the outside world. But, you know, as long as she’s happy….I don’t know who’s making her happy”

With the cameras pointed more at off-court drama than the action at centre court, Friday’s coverage left fans wondering whether ESPN is more interested in tabloid buzz than tennis.

Sabalenka went on to beat Raducanu in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 to advance to Round 4.

“Emma played such incredible tennis and she pushed me really hard to get this win,” said the 27-year-old Belarusian.

Too bad we didn’t get to see it.
