Keeanu Benton has signed a four-year, $72 million extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The deal carries an average annual value of $18 million and makes Benton the highest-paid defensive lineman in team history.

The extension keeps Pittsburgh committed to a player it selected with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Benton has developed into a starting-caliber defensive lineman during his first three seasons with the club.

Keeanu Benton’s Contract Terms With Pittsburgh

Benton’s four-year deal is worth $72 million overall, with that $18 million annual average placing him at the top of the Steelers’ defensive-line pay scale ahead of the 2026 season.

In 51 games over his first three seasons, Benton has recorded 123 combined tackles, nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. He has primarily played nose tackle for Pittsburgh across that span.

Keeanu Benton’s Role In Patrick Graham’s Defense

Benton is expected to move to 3-4 defensive end in defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s scheme in 2026, a shift away from the nose tackle spot he has occupied for most of his career. The position change gives Pittsburgh a different look up front for a player many felt was miscast at nose tackle under the previous coaching staff.

Benton now has a long-term place in Graham’s plans after establishing himself as a full-time starter over his first three NFL seasons.

Darnell Washington And Nick Herbig Also Extended By Pittsburgh

Benton joins tight end Darnell Washington and outside linebacker Nick Herbig among Steelers players from the 2023 draft class who have signed long-term extensions this offseason.

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. remains the notable holdout from that class. He has yet to reach a long-term agreement with Pittsburgh and is currently working back from injury on the physically unable to perform list.

What The Benton Extension Means For The Steelers’ Defense

The Steelers have made a significant financial commitment to Benton as they reshape their defensive front for 2026, locking down a player with three full seasons of starting experience and a track record of production across the stat sheet.

With Benton, Washington and Herbig all under long-term contracts, Pittsburgh has continued to invest heavily in the core of its 2023 draft class.
