Justin Marks made the declaration.
“I think we are just witnessing greatness and when (Shane van Gisbergen’s) time in NASCAR is over, I think he will stand alone on the top of the mountain as the greatest road course racer that’s ever shown up in the series in those 75 years,” Marks told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “It’s an amazing thing to witness and we’re just really stoked that he’s doing it with Trackhouse.”
The Cup Series team owner has the data to back up the statement.
Van Gisbergen, who swept both national series races from the pole last weekend at Chicago Street Race, captured his second Cup road-course race in a row. The circuit rookie has three career wins, including his 2023 debut at Chicago in the rain. Entering the Mexico City event ranked No. 33 in the drivers’ standings and 130 points below the cutoff line, van Gisbergen shook up the playoff chase after posting a victory margin of 16.567 seconds.
“You come to these tracks with a guy like Shane, that’s the dream,” Marks said.
Can van Gisbergen pull off another double this weekend at Sonoma Raceway?
For the Cup event, van Gisbergen (+150) was tabbed as the sports-betting favorite to capture Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, according to BetOnline Sportsbook.

Another great day driving a great @WeatherTech Chevy! 🏆 To win 4 of the 6 races here in Chicago is crazy, love this track. Thinking of Tim Miles & his family today, brilliant kiwi racer, think he would have enjoyed that race. pic.twitter.com/K3B7Zln9u1

Toyota/Save Mart 350 Storylines
- Cup Series points leader William Byron finished last at Chicago. With seven regular-season races remaining, the Hendrick Motorsports driver is pursued by four pilots, including two teammates, who are within 50 points of the top spot.
- Will Xfinity Series standout Austin Hill finally start seriously listening to potential offseason offers to join the Cup Series full time in 2026? He has turned down previous opportunities. After last Sunday’s first Cup top-10 finish, will his interest be piqued?
- Ty Dillon, despite finishing P20 at Chicago, advanced in the In-Season Challenge. The No. 32-seeded driver qualified for the round of eight and will face No. 8 Alex Bowman at Sonoma.
Ty Dillon trolled Brad Keselowski's viral basketball fail.
"Nothing personal against Brad, I just think basketball isn't his game. He kinda set back the athleticism of NASCAR drivers back for a couple years."

Toyota/Save Mart 350 Predictions and Picks
Here are our best NASCAR Cup Series bets for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway:
Ty Gibbs (+1100)
With some circuit insiders beginning to question the nepotistic attitude of Joe Gibbs Racing, the owner’s grandson tied a career-best P2 at Chicago. Ty Gibbs will continue to draw criticism until he wins his first race.
Michael McDowell (+1100)
McDowell appeared in control of the early stages at Chicago and appeared to be on line with the team’s one-pit stop strategy. His effort came up short after enduring throttle cable problems. The long-shot could content at the hilly, 12-turn, 1.99-mile track.
Tyler Reddick (+1400)
With back-to-back top-five finishes, including a P3 last Sunday, Reddick ranks fifth in points, but still has not qualified for the playoffs. Will he break through at Sonoma?
