San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama received a concerning diagnosis during the All-Star break back in February. But according to the 21-year-old himself, he has been cleared to resume basketball activities, and should be a full go for the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season.
Wembanyama Cleared For Basketball Activity
It is great news for everyone involved. During his second season in the league, Wembanyama was named to his first All-Star Game, and was on the fast track to winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.
The Spurs have officially cleared Wemby to return to basketball activities, he said in a statement to L'Équipe 🔥
A deep vein right shoulder thrombosis limited him to just 46 games last season.

But after participating in the February festivities, the 7’4” center was shut down for the remainder of the season. The diagnosis was for a case of deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder, better known as blood clots. It wasn’t your typical NBA health report, and was actually the same condition that ended the career of Chris Bosh prematurely back in 2017.
There were concerns not only with his short term health, but small amounts of doubt began to creep in about Wembanyama’s overall future in the league.
In an interview with French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Wembanyama himself said that the issue is now in the past, and that he has been cleared by doctors to resume his basketball career.
Spurs Have A Talented But Inexperienced Roster
The Spurs will be able to continue to use Victor Wembanyama as the centerpiece they build their team around. Stephon Castle’s performance last season ensured two straight Rookie of the Year Awards for the Spurs organization, and they also added point guard De’Aaron Fox to the mix via trade back in February.

Then, they were able to land the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which they used to select top prospect Dylan Harper out of Rutgers.
The Spurs now have one of the youngest and most inexperienced cores in the NBA, but one that is full of promise and potential. The Western Conference is likely to be a bloodbath in 2025-26, and San Antonio may not be fully ready to compete for another year or more. But look for them to take a big step forward during the upcoming campaign, especially if their roster is full of healthy bodies.
