The Texas Longhorns are No. 1 in the preseason coaches’ poll for the first time in history. 28 of the 67 panelists picked Texas as the top team.
The defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes finished in second with 20 first-place votes.
With Texas and Ohio State occupying the first two positions, it will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 as the Longhorns travel to Columbus to play the Buckeyes in Week 1. The heavyweight showdown will be played on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 12 p.m. ET on FOX. The new-look Big Noon Kickoff will be on-site to preview the action.
The game is a rematch of last year’s Cotton Bowl Classic, one of the semifinal sites in the College Football Playoff. During that game, Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer returned a fumble 83 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give the Buckeyes a 28-14 victory.
Ohio State would go on to defeat Notre Dame in the national championship.
Both teams will have different signal callers under center in Week 1. Arch Manning is now entrusted with leading the Texas offense after spending two years as a backup to Quinn Ewers. Meanwhile, Ryan Day is still deciding between quarterbacks Lincoln Kienholz and Julian Sayin.
The AP Poll comes out next week, so let’s see if Texas and Ohio State will still be ranked one and two.

Besides Texas and Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State (14), No. 4 Georgia (3), and No. 6 Clemson (2) received first-place votes. No. 5 Notre Dame did not receive a first-place vote despite being ranked higher than Clemson.
Penn State and Georgia face inferior non-conference opponents in Week 1. Notre Dame and Clemson, on the other hand, have much tougher games to open the season.
No. 5 Notre Dame plays No. 10 Miami on Aug. 31, and No. 6 Clemson hosts No. 9 LSU on Aug. 30.
