NASCAR Cup Series veteran Brad Keselowski had a chance Sunday at Iowa Speedway.
It slipped away.
Keselowski, who entered Sunday ranked No. 24 in the drivers’ standings, swept both stages and trailed eventual winner William Byron and Chase Briscoe over the final laps, but could not create last-lap drama.
Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet did not run out of gas and Briscoe continued his second-half rise as a first-year driver of the No. 19 Toyota.
With three regular-season races remaining, Keselowski, the 2012 Cup champion, likely needs to win to avoid missing the playoffs.
“It’s frustrating not to win,” Keselowski told NBC Sports, “but I’m not frustrated at my team. I’m frustrated that we didn’t catch the breaks we needed. Every yellow was bad for us. You get frustrated at the field for wrecking so much.”
With Sunday’s win, Byron returned to first place in the drivers’ standings, topping Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott by 18 points.
