The 2025 US Open men’s draw has been revealed and there are some absolutely tantalizing matchups in play.
As expected, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz being the top two seeds, they can only play each other in the final. In what Novak Djokovic will see as a refreshing but still difficult change, he can’t play Sinner until the final either.
Djokovic lost to the Italian in straight sets at both the French Open and Wimbledon in the semis. This time around, his path is aligned with Alcaraz for a potential semifinal clash.
The two memorably played each other at the Australian Open quarterfinals in which the Serbian came away with a four set victory.
It has been a bit of a strange triangle between the current top three in men’s tennis the last while. Alcaraz has won six of the last seven encounters with Sinner, the lone exception being this year’s Wimbledon final. Alcaraz won the most recent final in Cincinnati, but Sinner retired from the match after just five games with illness.
Djokovic, meanwhile, has won four of the last five matches against Alcaraz. The only victory for the Spaniard came at the 2024 Wimbledon final for which Djokovic had only just recovered from meniscus surgery.
Completing this entertaining yet confusing triangle, Sinner has won his last five matches with Djokovic. The last time Djokovic defeated Sinner was at the 2023 ATP Finals final.
Let’s look at the other compelling matchups from the earlier rounds and what’s in store for the Americans.
Shelton’s Path To US Open Glory Runs Through Alcaraz
Arguably the most in-form American, Ben Shelton has been handed a pretty good draw all things considered.
He will face a qualifier or lucky loser in Round 1, followed by possibly Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round. The highest seed he can face in the third round is the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor. The highest seed he can face in the fourth round is 2022 U.S. Open finalist Casper Ruud.
The Norwegian is no longer at the peak of his powers and is seeded 12th as a result.
If the Toronto Masters champion can navigate his way to the quarterfinals, it will likely be Alcaraz who awaits. That would present a thoroughly mouthwatering clash that would very likely be under the lights at Arthur Ashe. Shelton has lost all three meetings with the Spaniard, though the American did take a set off him for the first time at this year’s French Open.
Fritz Could Face Tiafoe In All-American Quarterfinal
The other man the home crowd will be pinning big hopes on is fourth seed Taylor Fritz. Last year’s finalist has a fairly comfortable draw through the first four rounds with his toughest possible opponent being 16th seeded Jakub Mensik.
Mensik’s best tennis came early in the year when he won the Miami Masters, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. He has not come close to scaling those heights since and withdrew from his third round match in Cincinnati due to illness.
Fritz’s most likely opponent in the quarterfinals would be Djokovic. There is a possibility, though, of facing fellow American Frances Tiafoe or even Denmark’s Holger Rune.
Tiafoe and Rune could meet in a tasty third round clash with the winner going on to likely face Djokovic. It’s not the easiest path for the Serbian, so he could be a bit leggy come the fourth round which would aid whoever meets him there.
If Tiafoe can find a way past Rune, he is someone known to rise to the occasion. He has defeated Rafael Nadal at this very tournament and would love to add Djokovic to his tally.
Djokovic loves a hostile environment, so that could make for one of the best atmospheres of the tournament.
