With the 53-day roster deadline rapidly approaching, one of the position groups to keep an eye on is the wide receivers of the Green Bay Packers. Will head coach Matt LaFleur cut one of his top wideouts?

There are only 53 spots on an active NFL roster. Unfortunately, that means a handful of players will be cut or traded by 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 26.
The Packers have an abundance of talent at the wide receiver position. The Packers’ wideouts competing for playing time are Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Romeo Doubs, Mecole Hardman, Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, and Savion Williams.
The Packers might have one too many mouths to feed at receiver. Doubs, in particular, has been mentioned as a candidate to be traded or cut before Tuesday.
While speaking with Kay Adams on Up & Adams, LaFleur shut down any rumors of the team moving on from Doubs.
“I’d be very shocked if he was ever going anywhere,” LaFleur said. “No, that will not happen.
Drafted in the fourth round back in 2022, Doubs has received consistent playing time with the Packers in three seasons.
Doubs has registered 147 receptions for 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns. Doubs’ best season came in 2023, setting career highs in games started (16), receptions (59), yards (674), and touchdowns (8).
With Watson nursing an ACL injury, Doubs is one of the more experienced receivers on the roster, a valuable commodity to have on a young team.
“Rome is out there competing and doing everything that we need to see from him,” LaFleur said. “Obviously, he’s played a lot of ball for us and at a high level. He’s been a great teammate. He goes out there, and you can count on him every day.”

Even if the team wants to move Doubs, they might need to keep the receiver out of necessity.
Several of the Packers’ receivers are dealing with injuries. Watson is expected to start the year off on the PUP list, meaning he would miss at least the first four games of the season.
Reed (foot) and Wicks (calf) have battled injuries throughout training camp.
Last season, Reed led the Packers in catches (55) and yards (857) and had the second most receiving touchdowns (6) behind Tucker Kraft (7).
The Packers have been searching for a true alpha receiver since Davante Adams. That could be why the team drafted Golden and Williams. Golden became the first Packers receiver to be taken in the first round since 2002.
The Packers open the season at home against the Detroit Lions.
