Ryder Cup 2025: Date, Teams, Format, & Prize Money

While the PGA Tour season has officially wrapped up at East Lake Golf Club with Tommy Fleetwood capturing his maiden Tour Championship title, golf fans can still look forward to the excitement of the 2025 Ryder Cup. This three-day competition will feature the best players from the United States and Europe competing in match play formats.

The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 26–28, with Team USA and Team Europe battling it out in a mix of formats, including foursomes, four-ball, and singles matches.

This year marks the 45th Ryder Cup, which will be hosted on U.S. soil at the iconic Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

Who is Playing at the 2025 Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup will feature 12 of Europe’s top golfers going head-to-head against 12 of the best from Team USA. Each team is led by a captain, who selects six players to complete the roster, while the other six earn their spots through qualifying.

For Team USA, the top six players in the Ryder Cup standings after the BMW Championship automatically qualified for the 2025 team. Those players are Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau.

Captain Keegan Bradley rounded out the American roster on Wednesday morning, adding Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, Patrick Cantlay, and Sam Burns as his captain’s picks.

On the European side, the first six qualifiers are determined by Ryder Cup points following the British Masters. The confirmed players so far are Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard, and Tyrrell Hatton. European captain Luke Donald has yet to announce his six captain’s picks, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the final lineup.

What is the Ryder Cup Format?

The Ryder Cup will be played across three days. The first two days feature team play, with golfers competing in pairs in two different formats, foursomes and four-ball. The final day will consist of 12 head-to-head singles matches.

In foursomes, two teammates alternate shots with the same ball. The team with the lowest score wins the hole, while tied scores result in the hole being halved.

In four-ball, each golfer plays their own ball. The lowest individual score on each team counts, and the lowest score wins the hole. If both teams record the same lowest score, the hole is halved.

The singles matches are straightforward: one player from each team goes head-to-head, and the lowest score wins the hole. Ties result in the hole being halved.

Over three days, a total of 28 matches will be played, each worth one point. Matches that end in a tie are worth half a point to each team. The first team to reach 14.5 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the overall score ends tied at 14–14, the reigning Ryder Cup champion retains the trophy, which means Team Europe only needs a tie this year to keep the Cup.

Ryder Cup 2025 Prize Money

There is no prize purse awarded at the Ryder Cup. Each of the 12 U.S. golfers will receive $500,000 for competing, with $300,000 of that amount directed to charity. European players, however, do not receive any financial compensation.
